The Perks of Being a Wildflower

DSC_0600

When I was younger, I loved looking up the symbols of birth months – birth stones, astrological symbols, birth flowers; being a July baby: ruby, Leo, larkspur.  But, I was never all that excited about my birth flower, not compared to April with sweet peas or August with lilies.  I never saw my birth flower growing wildly in fields near my cabin in Utah or daintily posed in the floral section of the grocery in puffy bouquets sprayed with dense TDZ.  I had no idea what a larkspur was, and I had completely forgot about them, right until recently when, while scrolling through the Travel Nevada Instagram, I noticed a picture featuring a vibrant, purple field of flowers with an orange sunset setting the scene.  Larkspurs!  I had finally found them, and they were so close!  I was (clearly) excited, until I reached my destination and realized I was actually looking at…

Lupines.

Also, I had missed prime lupine season, so all I was going to find after an hour drive to Lake Tahoe at 7 p.m. after an 8 hour shift was a bunch of green bushes with a few leftover purple flowers slowly closing for the season.  But never the matter.  I was at the lake, it was a beautiful day, and fields of green and purple are even better than just fields of purple, in my personal opinion.  However, my favorite color has been green my whole life, so I may be biased.

Apparently, the best time to visit the lupines is in June, when the weather is warm, the lake is higher, and the water can reach the bushes.  There are fuzzy, mostly-black bees swarming the flowers, and little orangey-red ladybugs fly around with them.  I also found a tiny, secluded beach where the wildflowers are abundant, and I spent a quiet evening relaxing in the sand and watching the sunset.  After a few hours at the beach, I stopped by one of my favorite local pizza places, Wild Garlic, where I had cheese pizza with plenty of jalapenos, ranch, and honey (for the crust.  A Reno thing, I believe).  After a long day at work, I was very excited to relax and enjoy some me time, especially in such a serene place.

Casual Friday

Last weekend, I stayed at my aunt’s house to watch her dogs while she was out of town. Her house is perfect for fashion photography.  Spacious, forest-y, perfect lighting, privacy. I was in love with the photog conditions here.  I always want to take pics in the forest, but it can be difficult to get the lighting perfect and set up a tripod with a timer and, most importantly, hike to said destination in whatever cutesy outfit I’m wearing.  But now?  Aunt’s house.  All the way.  Why didn’t I think of this before?

Anyways, the other day I was going through a bag of clothes that my friend gave me a while ago.  I don’t actually want to tell you how long it took me to go through the clothes, because it’s actually kind of embarrassing, but the bag got thrown in the back of my closet, and I got busy, and well…you know what happened.  Anyways, I pulled out this t-shirt dress, which I actually thought was a weird long shirt and almost didn’t try on.  But then I decided to give it a chance, and ohhh my gosh, it’s the cutest most comfortable t-shirt dress!  I was stoked on life.  I wore it at work and on a date and at the park and while hiking a little.  It can do anything.  Where can I buy all the t-shirt dresses?  I’ll become a spokesperson for them, I swear.  Also, they go so well with everything like sandals, oxfords, sweaters, flannels, etc.  Where have t-shirt dresses been all my life?

(I loooooove you t-shirt dress).

If you haven’t already noticed, dressing up is one of my favorite things to do.  I like crafting outfits, putting different clothing articles together that are out-of-the-ordinary, and I love when people compliment my fashion.  It definitely gives me some confidence, especially since most of my outfits are thrifted and original.  However, my other favorite thing to do is find clothing that is amazingly comfortable but also super cute.  Hi t-shirt dress hiiiii!

Valentine Hearts and Foggy Weather

IMG_0467
Dress: Innocence  Jacket: Hot Kiss  Scarf: Old  Boots: Minnetonka

This morning was amazing, because 1. I got a barista job after months of trying, and 2. It was just so beautiful and cloudy in Reno today, which is my favorite weather ever.  After I went to my job interview, I drove around town, celebrating with coffee, and the weather was perfect, temperate, and a little foggy.  I love foggy weather in Reno, because it gets a little cold, makes the colors of the mountains pop, and the temp feels like NoCal.

Normally, I love staying up late at night and sleeping later in the morning, but waking up early today made me see Reno in a different way.  I normally only experience the town around the busy hours of 10 a.m.-6 p.m., but today it was serene and much less stressful to drive in.  I listened to my San Fran CDs (Little Joy and Modern Vampires of the City) and drink way too much coffee (to fit the mood obviously!).  It felt so amazing to not feel anxious and actually enjoy driving for once (which is probably something I should work on anyways, but driving is so stressful!)

Fulfilling my dream of being the “heart eyes” emoji.

Today, I wore one of my favorite dresses that I got in London, which just so happens to be festive for upcoming Valentine’s Day!  This dress makes me feel so cute, and I also got to prove that red heads definitely can wear red.  (Not that I necessarily ever believed we couldn’t wear red.  Take that society).  But still, it felt like an accomplishment nonetheless.

I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day with your love or friends or family or dog or by yourself or not at all.

Fall Emeralds

IMG_9976

I find beauty in nature that most people disregard.  I love seeing red, orange, and yellow leaves all over the ground that most people rake up as soon as the last leaf falls.  In the spring, I love my overgrown rose bushes that most prune, throwing away hundreds of chiffon-like roses.  I like it when the grass is a little shaggy and dark, dark green.  I still like everything trimmed back eventually, but for that week that it is overgrown, it’s so neat to see my backyard as an enchanted forest or secret garden.

Right now my purple wisteria is a mess of dried up, flimsy leaves and my rose bushes are reddish brown and there is a small patch of leftover snow in the shaded corner of my yard.  Fall in Reno is one of my favorite things in the world.  In the morning, it’s a bitter, dry cold.  The sky is a brilliant blue, cloudless, and bright from the sun.  It smells like sagebrush.  The city is covered in reds, oranges, browns, yellows, and greens.  I drive to class in the morning, hands cloaked in leather gloves, coffee clutched, waiting for my car to warm up enough to crank up the heat.  I listen to The National or Bon Iver.  This is how I remember Reno when I used to visit when I was a little girl.  It’s my stereotypical memory of Reno, and I long for it every year.

IMG_0006

I feel like my personality is fall.  My favorite colors, favorite foods, taste in music, etc.  I picked this dress because it is my favorite color.  I can dress it up or dress it down.  It’s perfect for a chilly fall day.

Also, it makes me feel like a badass witch, and all I really want in life is to be Hermione Granger, so I think I’ve accomplished all my goals.  I wore my moon necklace with it, because that’s probably what a witch would do.

A Mint Green Summer

IMG_8197

It’s warm in Reno!  Officially.  I wore a sundress.  No givsies backsies.

Aside from the fact that I’ve been stuck inside everyday in a 3 week Labor Economics class, I’ve been really enjoying my summer so far with BBQs and bike rides.  I’ve yet to make it to Tahoe (stomach flu is out to get me), but I will be there this weekend no matter what!

Catch ya girl on the beach with an iced tea in her hand.

Or something that sounds a little cooler…?

IMG_8158

Also, I have some very very very veryyyyyyyy exciting news.  I will be studying for a month this summer in London through my university!  I’m so excited to explore the city and post fun little things I do on SSL.

I’m going to get so British guys.

So British.

Anyways, since I’ll probably be busy with my studies and traveling around London, I want to start a weekly post where I list a few cool things I come upon throughout the week.  This could be a piece of art at a museum, a fun outfit I wear, a nice meal, a new song/video I find, a great cup of coffee, or anything else that I love.  Basically my “happy things”, which is something that I actually think about, but have never expressed in writing.  Since I believe that happiness is unlimited, I will not have a set number of happy things that I post about.  If I happen to have 10, then I will write about 10.  If I have 2, then the same.

And of course, I will write a few regular posts when I can (except for recipes, because I won’t have kitchen access).

If anyone has some recommendations for London or Paris please please please tell me!  I’m looking for some fun, local things to do once I get tired of tourist attractions.  So far, I’m seeing The Strokes and that’s about my whole plan.

Yep.  Really killin it with the planning.

Wheat Print Dress, French Fries, and Home Libraries

IMG_7336

Happy happy Friday!

It’s almost 3 and I’m sure half of you can’t wait to get out of work and half of you just finished your last class of the day and are on your way to your unpaid internship.

Either way, I hope that you’re having a wonderful Friday afternoon.  Luckily, I was able to get all of my classes Monday-Thursday this semester and I don’t work Friday so I’ve just been having the most relaxing day.  Yay for Fridays off!  When you work and go to school six days a week, having Fridays off is absolutely the most wonderful thing in the world.

I actually spent the day in bed, eating French fries, watching Sex in the City, and reading random books.  Tonight I’m driving to Tahoe to have dinner with my friend.  *angels randomly begin singing*

I really think that it’s important to relax every once in a while doing exactly what you want to do.  I really love watching TV and eating and relaxing every once in a while.  If you really love going out and dancing, do that.  If you really love spending some free time sewing or bowling or hiking, you do you.  Of course, I love sewing and hiking and playing piano and singing and writing songs and baking, etc. etc.  But sometimes I just want to lay in bed and watch reruns of The Office.  So I did that.  Take a mental health break every once in a while and lay in bed for a day.  Your brain will love you.

IMG_7320

I also taught myself how to use my tripod, which my brother showed me how to use like, 8 times, but I either wasn’t listening or can’t figure out how to do things correctly.  Either way, it happened and now we have pictures.

*Ignore my messy floor please & thank u*

This is one of my favorite dresses ever.  You can expect to see it in the future.  I have about ten black dresses (it’s getting to be a problem).  After buying a black dress at American Apparel over the summer, I saw this one about two weeks later.  I almost didn’t buy it.  But I had to.

And I wear both dresses all the time.

So it was totally worth it.

This outfit is actually a combination of some of my favorite articles of clothing.  1. The dress  2. The shoes  3. Tights in general, and 4. the cardigan.  I’ll actually wear this outfit in the early fall or late spring with another sweater that’s more flowy and less warm.  But since it’s been chilly around Reno, I decided that this cardigan would be my best option.

Cardigans can substitute for winter jackets in 40 degree weather, right?

Probably.

I will wear this outfit whenever I don’t know what else to wear.  I have about five or six “go-to” outfits, and this is definitely one of them.  I have a cute black pair of heeled ankle boots that look really cute with the dress if I need to dress up a little more.  Simple dress + heeled ankle boots + jacket/cardigan + smoky eye = really great outfit.

IMG_7342

One of my favorite parts is the simplicity of the print.  It looks like wheat to me.  I don’t know if it really is, but I’ve decided they’re little wheat stalks.

Floral Layers

IMG_7229

Good things so far about the new year:

1. I ate ice cream twice today.

2. I learned what ‘fleek’ means.

3. FRIENDS IS ON NETFLIX (goodbye social life. goodbye productivity)

4. I learned the lyrics to “Breezeblocks” by Alt-J.

Things that could use some improving:

1. My grammar is progressively getting worse post by post.  (I promise I know how to use commas and periods and spelling correctly.  I’m just lazy and like to pretend I’m blogging on twitter apparently).

2. I’m housesitting for a friend and while I was getting her mail today I dropped the mail key into the bushes in front of the mail box and the key disappeared into the snow and I still have yet to find it.  Do you know how not fun it is to dig around in the snow on your hands and knees for 15 minutes in the dark before accepting defeat.  DO YOU?!

Anyways, hopefully a good magnet taped to a wooden spoon will help in the morning.

IMG_7231

Anyways, yesterday night my brother and I went to my cousin’s house for dinner.  We arrived about 15 minutes early, so we decided to take some pictures outside before we went in.  (Mostly I just really liked my outfit).

The pictures are way too bright since it was a weird time of day, but I think they do the job.

This dress is one of my favorites, and a perfect example of how to make a summer dress into a winter outfit.  I always wear it with leggings (because it’s really short!) but add a sweater, boots, and a jacket and it becomes a winter outfit!

And it makes me very very happy!

Anyways, my brother left this morning so I’ve been a little sad today.  Living alone (or with two roommates in college) gets a little lonely so I always have a little time of mourning after somebody goes home.  But I practiced piano, watched The Help, and had a nice solo dinner so it wasn’t the worst day.  Plus, my brother will be back soon!  Another thing to add to my list of good this year!

What are some good things about your new year so far?

How to Shrink TOMS and Why Tuesday is Not my Friend

This title may sound weird but it is definitely true.  Tuesday is not my friend.

But not just this Tuesday, every Tuesday.  Tuesday to me is the Monday to most people.  If that makes sense.  Why do I despise Tuesdays so much you ask?  Because on Monday, I can accept that I have to get up at an ungodly hour, try to put on my makeup still half asleep, eat a breakfast I’m not hungry for, and then spend 4  hours at school before completing the numerous tasks I have to do at home.

But then I have to do it again on Tuesday?!  Ughhhhhhh.

If I could choose the events that occur throughout my Tuesday, it would include these activities (in no particular order):

Eat Chinese food (preferably for breakfast)

Blog.

Have somebody bake me a cake that is not myself.

Buy clothes.

Stare at my ceiling.

Eat Chinese food.

Eat cake.

Eat ice cream.

Make a craft I’m not obligated to make.

Write a song.

Eat Chinese food.

Sleep all day.

Watch “Friends”

I wish life were like that.  However, since it’s not like that I try to make the best out of my Tuesday.

Things I found particularly good that made my Tuesday a little better:

blog 008

blog 016

Making these confetti cupcakes.  They were so delicious (sorry, no recipe.  Then there would be no reason for my cupcake business ;))

blog 005

My piano.  Because I love my piano.

blog 025

Running shoes.  Because even though the thought of working out makes me cringe, I feel so much better afterwards.

blog 023

And lastly, the summer weather.  Only about 14 days of school left and I’m ready!

Clearly, this is my new attempt to make the hard days a little better, so if I post these once in a while, just work with me here.  Okay, now what you came here for.  How to shrink TOMS!

This year for Prom I decided to wear TOMS with my dress.  I bought them but when I tried them on they slipped right off my feet like flip flops 🙁

blog 014

Sorry about the pictures.  They were taken at night time.

I wanted to shrink them in the wash, but I guess that will tear them to pieces.  Which I expected.  I mean, come on, handmade shoes won’t hold up being thrashed around in a medal cylinder.

Here’s how I shrunk my TOMS the easy way!

blog 012

Rinse your TOMS with hot water trying to avoid the leather part.  This will be really hard to do, and you will probably stop caring and give up.  It’s okay, it will dry.  They might stink a little though, so use some odor powder to rid of that!

blog 016

Set them out where it is hot!  Since I’m in Vegas, that was not difficult.  Next time though, I will dry them outside.  I just did it in the garage, and it was not as hot as I expected.

blog 026

When they’re dry, put them on!  They should shrink about 1/2-1 size.  If they are any bigger than that, return them.

Prom 2013 014

Here’s a picture of my and my boyfriend on Prom.  You can’t see my shoes but this is the dress they went with.  I’m so excited to see the pictures taken by our photographer!  Really can’t wait.

Also, it’s already 107 degrees in Vegas.  IN MAY!  This is getting crazy.  If you’ve never been in extreme heat like that, then you know why I’m so distraught.

Hope you all have a wonderful Tuesday 😉

XOXO Sara
